We wanted to get some thoughts about living in Spain vs living in Portugal, as I am not sure where would be a better place to live long-term/settle down. It has always been my goal to live in the Iberian peninsula, as I think it is beautiful + I love the relaxed atmosphere. I am trying to make that goal a reality for 2022/23/

About me:
I am a programmer from the US living in Mexico City. Employer is cool with me living in the EU / anywhere really. I’m not a big fan super touristy spots (I try to avoid Condesa here in CDMX). I love the mountains and the ocean, though I have bias towards the mountains. I like quieter areas. When I was in BCN in Gracia, I thought that was pretty quiet (for reference). I’ve been to Spain, but not to Portugal. The dream would be Barcelona, or somewhere near there (4ish hours from the Pyrenees/ a lot of rock climbing, can wind surf if I wanted), but Spain still hasn’t released it’s DN visa.

Portugal’s D7 visa is a really great option and I could get started on it right now, but I’d have to learn Portuguese + there are less mountains. I speak Spanish and Russian, so learning the language of the place I am living is important… that being said, no matter what language you learn, it is difficult and takes quite a bit of time and energy. That being said…maybe Portugal is the better option?

The Question:

I just want to hear everyone’s perspective about living in Spain vs Portugal. I figured if I moved to Portugal, I would move to Lisbon for the first year to get my feet wet. If I was to move to Spain it would probably be in the burbs of BCN. I listed some other questions below as well.
What’s it like living in Lisbon vs BCN / Portugal vs Spain?
If you are you an outdoorsy person, were you able to comfortable get out of the city and do some hiking, rock-climbing type of activities?
Are there a lot of tourists? I don’t mean are there a lot of tourists in the touristy spots of the city…but do you get a feeling like they are overrunning the city? 😛
How accepting are they of foreigners?
What are the people like in general (I know this is a hard question, as everyone is different)?
